We’re back, and immediately find that things are not going well for Marguerite. Faust has left her, alone and pregnant. We’ve included the often cut Spinning Song, powerfully sung by Christina.
This is usually followed by an aria for Siebel called “Si le bonheur.” That aria was written a few years after the premiere in 1859 to replace the aria “Versez vos chagrins,” which then disappeared until it the vocal line was published with a reconstructed piano accompaniment in the 1970s. We have orchestrated it in what we hope is Gounod’s style, and right now Elizabeth is giving that reconstruction its world premiere.
Now the Soldier’s Chorus appears for real, sung powerfully by the EO Chorus.
